WWC Announces Third Doctoral Scholar in Veterans Health Research

November 25, 2015

QUEBEC CITY – Wounded Warriors Canada (WWC) is proud to announce their third recipient of the Wounded Warriors Doctoral Scholarship, Ms. Helena Hawryluk, from the University of Calgary. In 2013, Wounded Warriors Canada made a 10-year, $400,000 commitment to fund a doctoral scholarship program in partnership with the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR), based at Queen’s University. The gift will fund new scholarships for students from universities across Canada as they research issues relevant to military members, Veterans and their families.

“We are very proud to be partnered with CIMVHR as part of this legacy commitment for Wounded Warriors Canada,” Scott Maxwell, Executive Director of Wounded Warriors Canada. “This scholarship has enabled some of the country’s best students to research and identify evidence-based methods by which we can best assist our Veterans and military families confronting the daily challenges of operational stress injuries like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.”

Dr. Alice Aiken, Scientific Director of CIMVHR, commented, “The Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research is proud of our scholarship program with Wounded Warriors Canada. This type of funding support has revolutionized the future of research about the health of Canadian military personnel, Veterans and their families.”

Helena Hawryluk, WWC Doctoral Scholarship recipient, commented, “I am extremely honored to receive the 2015 Wounded Warriors Canada Doctoral Scholarship. WWC is committed to providing a spectrum of care to the families of ill and injured CAF members and Veterans.  My research on adolescent experiences during reintegration in the context of post-Afghanistan deployments will focus on a vital component of the Canadian Armed Forces previously invisible to the research community.  My purpose is to gain a better understanding of our military’s youth in order to promote family-centred support programs to better meet the needs of our service members and their families.”

The Canadian Institute For Military And Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) is an innovative organization that engages existing academic research resources and facilitates the development of new research, research capacity and effective knowledge translation. With a network of academic researchers from across Canada, it serves as the hub for 40 Canadian universities who have agreed to work together in addressing the health research requirements of the Canadian military, Veterans and their families.
