Trauma Resiliency Training

About

The Trauma Resiliency Training (TRT) program has been designed to help TExP’s recognize, manage, and address the common and predictable effects of exposure to traumatic events. TRT provides the most relevant information to frontline, sworn, civilian members and organizations in a manner that allows non-mental health professionals to understand what is being taught quickly and apply it instantly to their personal experiences as TExPs.

Background

Wounded Warriors Canada’s Trauma Resiliency Training (WWC-TRT) is available to all Trauma Exposed Organizations (TExO) that employ individuals who are exposed to traumatic events as a regular part of their work duties.

This backgrounder is to provide an overview of the different training delivery modes for organizations that have reviewed the TRT curriculum and purpose, and are deciding which mode of delivery best suits their current needs and capacity.

TRT – DIRECT

4-Hour

The TRT-Direct delivery is a 4-hour session, facilitated and delivered direct to participants by one of our TRT Lead Trainers. The session is best delivered in person, but can also be delivered online to a small or large group of participants within the same organization. The curriculum covered in TRT-Direct is the same curriculum covered in the TRT Train-the-Trainer delivery, which ensures consistent messaging and education across the organization.

Facilitated by TRT Lead Trainers, the depth of information and conversation is often expanded with nuanced examples and discussions over a four-hour period of time. TRT-Direct, is designed to provide clear, engaging, and relevant trauma education to participants in a relatively short period of time.

Organizations may also choose to begin with TRT-Direct as an initial step, then follow-up at a later date with TRT Train-the-Trainer. The trainings both cover the same curriculum, providing consistent and common educational experiences and language for organizations and their members, which can enhance understanding and communication across different areas and roles.

TRT – TRAIN-THE-TRAINER

3-DAY

TRT Train-the-Trainer is a 3-Day, professionally facilitated (in-person) peer-based trauma education program. The organization selects up to 25 staff members to receive the training who then are licenced to deliver the curriculum internally to their peers over a two-year period. TRT  Train-the-Trainer is designed to deliver the same base curriculum as TRT-Direct, which his then delivered internally to the organization by the organization’s own employees, which can have a significant effect on uptake.

Trainees spend three days learning a set curriculum provided to them by the TRT Lead Trainers. They receive coaching, feedback, and the opportunity to work in small teams with their peers learning how to deliver the TRT curriculum in a consistent, clear, and accessible manner.

TRT Train-the-Trainer is designed for organizations that are seeking to build capacity for trauma education that is both scalable and sustainable. The 3-Days of in-person training are also part of the experience for employees as they engage in the training with the Lead Trainers over an extended period of time, along with over twenty of their peers, often enhancing connections amongst trainees.

TRT – LEADERSHIP

1-day (8hrs) or half-day (4 hrs)

The TRT-L program can be delivered as a 1-day (8hrs) or half-day (4hrs) training. It is designed to introduce TExP Leaders to the TRT curriculum, including the BETR model, Trauma Formula, and FORGE method of regulation, involves a combination of didactic teaching, discussion, case examples, and skills practice amongst a group of TExP Leaders. The TRT-L is designed specifically for individuals who are in leadership roles in military, veteran, police, firefighting, paramedic, corrections, and health care settings. Leaders who participate in TRT-L should be responsible for a variable number of direct reports and will have, as part of their mandate, the support and promotion of their members’ mental health in some capacity.

TRT-L PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT TO LEAVE THE TRAINING WITH:

  1. An increased understanding of trauma as it relates to the work of TExP.
  2. A working model to assist leaders in understanding their unique role in helping to maintain and support the mental health of their TExP employees.
  3. An increased understanding of trauma-informed skills for TExP Leaders
  4. A potential decrease in their sense of isolation in the role of TExP Leader.

TRT-L FOLLOW-UP

All TRT-L participants gain access to Wounded Warriors Canada’s extended network of clinical professionals, advocates, and educators committed to helping Trauma Exposed Organizations, TExP members, and TExP Leaders support the long-term mental health of TExPs and their families (TExF), as well as their own mental health as TExP Leaders. TRT-L participants are also provided with the opportunity for regular refresher courses, re-certification after two years, and available consultations with TRT-L Facilitators.
