Toronto, March 27, 2017 \u2013 Outward Bound Canada (OBC) is pleased to partner for the first time with Wounded Warriors Canada through a generous donation of $25,000 in support of the Outward Bound Canada Veterans\u2019 Program.\u00a0 This generous donation will fully fund the Veterans\u2019 Sea Kayaking program from June 24 to 30, 2017, which will see 10 Canadian Military Veterans take part in an inspiring and challenging journey of adventure and self-discovery in the Bay of Fundy region of New Brunswick.<\/p>\n

Scott Maxwell, Executive Director of Wounded Warriors Canada, commented, \u201cThrough many of our mental health programs we continue to witness first-hand the positive impact that group activities have in helping our Veterans overcome fear and isolation. The week-long expeditions provided by Outward Bound Canada provide our Veterans with an opportunity to reflect on and share their experiences and challenges in a supportive and restorative environment.\u00a0 We are proud to fund this outstanding program.\u201d<\/p>\n

For many participants the Outward Bound Canada Veterans\u2019 Program has been a gateway experience to seeking out additional wellness and therapeutic programs in order to reach their full potential. Around 30 per cent of participants are being treated for an Operational Stress Injury (OSI) and may either self-select for the program or be referred directly to the program by an OSI clinic or Joint Personnel Support Unit.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are extremely touched by this generous gift from Wounded Warriors that will go towards supporting our Bay of Fundy Veterans\u2019 Program in 2017,\u201d says Sarah Wiley, Executive Director, Outward Bound Canada. \u201cThis funding will help to make a real and lasting impact on the lives of 10 Canadian Veterans, and allows us to offer programming to Veterans that will span the country from coast to coast.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the courses are intentionally designed for and delivered to Veterans, they remain guided by the same core educational framework as all Outward Bound Canada courses. The courses are physically and emotionally committing, and participants are involved in all details of the program such as route planning, finding, and navigation; record keeping; cooking; group leadership; and, equipment management. There is no rank on course. Course activities include hiking and backpacking, rock and ice climbing, ski-mountaineering, alpine climbing, and Sea Kayaking, along with a broad range of experiential activities commonly used by OBC to support positive personal and group development outcomes.<\/p>\n
